Switching things up
We hope that you have had a good week. Things have been crowded around Falmouth, our local town, as the spectacle of the Tall Ships has been with us for the week. To think that in the early years of the cotton trade, such ships would have been used to bring cotton to the UK for processing. Things are changing again as now many of our fabrics arrive by ship rather than by air. During & since the pandemic, this has caused some delays in getting supplies, but it's always worth the wait & most suppliers have nearly caught up.

There is always plenty to keep us busy though. This week we have been cutting new fabrics and making fabric packs for many of the lovely patterns we stock. More fabric packs are added daily so just pop your name on a waitlist if the one you like is out of stock and we will notify you once they are made up.
|
When putting a fabric kit together we try to match up fabrics as close to the original choice as possible, however we also like to get inventive too. When we realised that one of our popular fabric packs could no longer be made in the original fabric range we had some fun! Below you will see how we used Tilda Cotton Beach to replace Tilda Garden Life in the Lazy Gardener Quilt.

New in this week is the autumn issue of Simply Vintage. Full of inspiration and gorgeous photography as always. We also have Sweet Melodies. A thirties feed sack inspired fabric collection with ditsy bright florals. With all the fabric packs we've been making, especially for the new patterns from Gail Pan, we now stock mesh and vinyl for the pockets in bags. Also just in are new lamps and bobbin boxes.

This is one of our favourite Tilda fabric ranges and why we want to share the love by offering a massive 25% saving this week on all Cotton Beach fabrics and fat 1/4s. The Lazy Gardener Quilt kit has been remade using Cotton Beach and we love the fresh summery look it gives. The chambrays included in the kit are not in the sale but the cotton beach fabrics used are at the sale price. The patterns sing alongside the beautiful Tilda Chambrays. The pattern is beginner friendly as it is made up of half square triangles. Michelle has started to put together a sample and we love it!

We have been joking that the gardener was so lazy that they decided they needed a beach holiday, so they left the seclusion of their garden for the ocean breeze and the feel of sand between their toes. The Lazy Gardener is now a Beach Bum and Garden Life has been replaced by Beach Life. What pattern have you made in alternative colours? Send us your pictures and we will add them to our Customer Gallery. In the gallery you can see the photos a customer sent us of her version of the Lazy Gardener along with other examples of work by customers.

We have been sitting on this range for a week or two waiting for more fabrics to arrive and now it looks like they will not appear. However, we do have a pretty selection plus the precuts and the range also coordinates well with the Amelia ditsy prints and so we have included them in the bundles.
|
Reminiscent of the feed sack prints of the American Depression era, these colours sing. In 1920s America feed sacks ( cloth bags for grains and animal feed etc) began to include water soluble labels and sewing instructions so the fabric could be repurposed. The rough hessian cloth of the late 1800s was replaced by softer cotton.
|
"Patterned bags marketed to women became enormously popular in the late 1930s. This led to companies vying for customers with the most vibrant and desirable prints on their bags. Farmers would bring their daughters into town to pick up feed so they could pick out the feed bags with the most beautiful prints, or to find a matching print for a dress they needed to complete. Thousands of different patterns of feed sacks were in production through the 1940s into the 1950s."

Our latest additions are the rechargeable lights. They are useful to give you a clear light where you are working. The mesh and vinyl and other bag making essentials are perfect to help give your bag a professional finish. Our packs for bag making patterns contain the essentials but if you would rather use your stash or choose your own fabric then to be able to buy these items is very useful.

Living in Cornwall we are blessed to be surrounded by all things nautical and this week we have once again welcomed the wonderful sight of the Tall Ships as part of their race to Spain and Portugal. It is a magnificent sight to see these giant sailing ships in the harbour and you can imagine how it was in the heydays of the Packet Sailing Ships.

We have no tall ships in the shop but we have plenty of little boats in the form of buttons, fabric, pattern weights and stuffed sailing boat kits.
