Portable Projects

Hello again. We hope that you have had a great week that's been filled with sewing opportunities. Sometimes it can be tricky to find time to do what makes us sparkle with happiness so this week we take a closer look at hand sewing projects that you can sew on the go!

Many of you may be members of a sewing group, or are planning trips away and want to have a portable project to make so we highlight some paper piecing and hand stitching patterns and kits that are easily transportable. One of our lovely customers, Claire, came to see us this week while on holiday. Unfortunately she spends a lot of time in hospital so she stocks up on hand sewing projects to keep herself busy while there. It spurred us on even more to look at things to make anywhere and everywhere. Many of us have sat on trains, in waiting rooms, hospitals, tents, or even on the beach, sewing away. Let us know the most unusual place that you have sewed in!

We are pleased to now have a good range of Sevenberry Japanese fine woven ginghams and stripes in stock and online. Also just in are several Cottage Cloth fabrics. Similar to a grunge but less patchy.

As always, enjoy your sewing and have a wonderful week.
Best wishes

English Paper Piecing Projects - EPP

We love paper piecing here at Coast and Country. It offers so much scope for using up scraps and to make small and large quilts while on the move.

English paper piecing is a traditional way of joining fabrics together by hand. Fabric is wrapped around a paper template to ensure accuracy of the shape. These are then stitched together with a whip stitch. Once all sides of the template have others joined to it the paper templates can be removed and the papers can be reused. Many EPP fans like to make their own papers from scrap paper or light card, but to save time and provide greater accuracy we have packs of precision cut papers available. More details below.

We have numerous patterns that use Paper piecing and they are suitable for those new to EPP as well as more experienced sewers.

Paper Piecing Papers!

We have an ever growing range of precision cut papers and acrylic templates for paper piecing. The acrylic templates have a seam allowance added on to them so you can cut your fabric to the right size plus they are transparent to enable you to fussy cut your fabric to get perfectly matched patterns or particular images centred.

We also sell gridded vilene that can be cut to size and left in your project. Some customers like to use freezer paper which can be cut to any shape and ironed on to the fabric, is removed easily and can be reused many times.

Beautiful books

Slow stitching Sashiko and Boro books and beautiful hand pieced and hand embroidery books. Something to inspire everyone.

Japanese Fine Woven fabric

Sevenberry fabrics are all delicious and we really love these extra fine woven ginghams and stripes. The largest gingham is am 1/8" square and the smaller one 1/16". This fabric is lighter weight than usual quilting cotton, more like a batik weight and they are beautiful to work with. They are a very soft and fluid fabric rather than a more textured woven.

Cottage Cloth fabric

Five rich solids fabrics with a slight mottled look to give more depth to the fabric.
