Chinese Thread Book Workshop with Sue Bovington

Join Sue to make one of these stunning Chinese Thread Books.  All materials included in the cost of the workshop & the use of tools.

Made by minority ethnic groups in China’s Guizhou Province, this ‘Zhen Xian Bao’ book is an ingenious domestic filing system. Made by both men and women, the folded pockets were filled with oddments of thread, buttons, tickets, seeds, lists and mementos.

During this one day workshop, you will make a 15 compartment/pocket version of this intriguing book using 160gsm cotton papers. The blue book, has had small triangles of marbled paper added to the top pockets as decoration, so if you have any small pieces of decorative paper or fabric you would like to use please bring them along. The papers provided will all be in a variety of plain colours, so that the measurement markings for cutting and folding can be more easily seen.

There will be bone folders, craft knives, paper knives, metal rulers, scalpels, and scissors, to share and borrow, but please bring your own tools if you have them. There is no stitching involved in the construction of the books, which will put together using Pritt (glue) sticks, which Sue will provide as they need to be brand new. It would be particularly helpful if students could bring an A2 or A3 cutting mat to the workshop if they have one, as Sue only has three that size.

All the necessary materials are included in the workshop cost.

This is a small class of no more than 8 people so you will get lots of individual attention.
