'I'm melting...' -
Good day to you. Anyone else feel like the wicked witch of the East from the Wizard of Oz? Hehe. How are you holding up if you are, like us in the UK, getting the heatwave? We hope that you have managed to find a cool spot to relax and create, or maybe you are enjoying the beautiful sea, a lake or a stream to keep you from overheating. If you are elsewhere we hope that you are also well and enjoying whatever the weather is providing you.
Given the sun we are enjoying, we thought this week we would take a look at all things cooling and outdoors. Alas, we do not sell ice cream or barbecues but we do have lots of delicious products that should keep you busy whilst either enjoying the sun or sitting in the shade. We will not be mentioning woolfelt, fleece or wadding as no one needs to be handling them in this heat! Think lightweight fabrics and cool colours. Blues, greens, Kaffe, Batik, sleeveless Summer dresses.
We know many of you are not as luck as us and have the sea close by, so we have included a couple of photos here to share the beauty of our county and help you to feel cooler.
Above is a photo of a life-size bronze sculpture of a man and seagull looking out to sea in Porthleven Harbour is called Waiting for Fish, and aims to highlight the importance of small-scale sustainable fishing. Below is the gorgeous Prussia Cove where Ladies in Lavendar & A Summer in February were filmed (& where Sally swam yesterday morning!).

If you are local to the Truro area or visiting by 20th August, don't miss the Threads Through Creation Art Exhibition by Jacqui Parkinson at Truro Cathedral. Jacqui spent three years making it, using eight million stitches on twelve huge (nearly 3m high) panels, re-imaging the first days of creation from the first pages of the Bible, more details below.

We look forward to continuing to help you with all things sewing related. It is our pleasure to provide a more personal service for our customers. If you call us & we are unable to answer the phone, please leave a message and we will get back to you.

With our Very Best wishes, keep cool! Sally & the girls

Batik fabrics are perfect to work with during hot days. They are so lightweight and conjure up time spent on or in the beach of a tropical island. They make delightful quilts but are also beautiful for clothes as they are cool to wear. Batiks are made using a wax resist technique, often using block prints. See our blog post all about batiks here.

For me, Kaffe Fassett fabrics always conjure up visions of summer and holidays. With their bright and bold designs and colours, you can't help but feel uplifted. We have several customers who have used Kaffe for making stunning dresses.

We have patterns to make lightweight cool summer dresses. Although they are a good way to use our linen fabrics they would also look amazing made in the batik or Kaffe fabrics for an even more lightweight and cool dress.

Oh look, we do sell ice creams, and caravans & surf board buttons. For us in Cornwall we are so familiar with all of them. We have the caravan buttons available as a simple button pack plus as a plaque kit with a blue wooden backing. Who doesn't love an ice cream when its a sunny day? Quirky wooden buttons to add embellishment and a flourish to projects.

This Moda Toweling comes with the selvedge edges already hemmed. It’s great for nautical style cushions and wall hangings. Think of this being more like a tea towel fabric rather than a bathroom towel.

Just the name pool party is making me feel cool as I sit and type trying to stay cool with a huge fan blowing over me. Splashing in a swimming or paddling pool would be idyllic right now. Maybe a walk on the beach and a dip once I'm finished.....

Threads Through Creation Art Exhibition at Truro Cathedral
If you are local to Truro or visiting the area by 20th August, this is a spectacular display of textile art not to be missed, one of the largest ever by a single artist!
Jacqui Parkinson spent three years making it, using eight million stitches on twelve huge (nearly 3m high) panels, re-imaging the first days of creation from the first pages of the Bible.
Jacqui has an international reputation for large scale work. Threads through Creation has been touring cathedrals and been seen by nearly a million visitors: this is the first and only chance to see it in Cornwall.
The twelve panels take you through the creation story ‘day’ by ‘day’ – starting with dramatic elemental designs, moving onto more and more elaborate images as the story takes you into the Garden of Eden. You’ll find the intricate stitching and powerful designs fascinating, absorbing and uplifting, as the exhibition turns the black and white pages of the Bible into amazing colour and variety . Children love it too, with nearly a hundred creatures to spot!
The Threads through Creation exhibition is at Truro Cathedral from Tuesday 08 July - Wednesday 20 August and can be seen during the cathedral's general visiting times.
